3 Things Affluent Chinese Millennial Travellers Really Want

China is quickly becoming one of the biggest global spenders when it comes to travel. By 2022, China is expected to overtake the US and become the largest source for outbound tourist demand. What’s one of the fastest growing segments within this already heated market? The answer is young, rich, and thrill-seeking millennials.

WTM Insights recently put together an article exploring the travel habits of affluent Chinese millennial travelers. We’ve summarised their findings and added our own thoughts here for you:

1. A Love of Luxury Goods

Chinese travellers aren’t the only ones who like to buy luxury goods like jewelry and designer handbags while on holiday, though they’re spending more and are typically younger than their European and North American counterparts. In 2015 French travellers spent $7.1 billion (USD) on luxury products while Americans spent $61.6 billion. The median age of French luxury shoppers was 44.5, while Americans were 37.6.

Chinese travelers aged 36.7, on the other hand, spent $83.9 billion in 2015. Even more important, over 50% of Chinese millennials say they’re likely to purchase luxury products while they’re travelling.

2. A Taste for Indulgent Hotels

While short-term Airbnb rentals might be soaring in popularity among North American and European millennial travellers, the same can’t be said for affluent Chinese millennials. In one survey, 28% of Chinese millennial travellers polled said they would not consider booking a private apartment while travelling.

What’s the reason? It’s simple: amenities. Affluent millennial travelers from China want niceties like chauffeur check-ins, luggage forwarding, and complimentary pick-up and drop-off services that luxury hotels are able to offer and they have the accommodation budgets (over $500 per night) to make that happen.

3. The Search for Memorable Experiences

Although luxury goods are important, affluent Chinese millennials still want the thing that most millennial travellers around the world crave—adventure. To that end, they’re spending more on experiences they’ll be able to document and share with friends, family, and colleagues once they return.

One of the hottest destinations for Chinese travellers is Africa. 36% of younger travellers said they plan to visit Africa in 2017 compared to 23% in 2016.
